Consumer Electronics Week Innovates Familiar Tech
A glasses-free, 3D mobile phone is just one of several products being unveiled at Consumer Electronics or CE Week in the Big Apple, a sort of mini,Under efforts of led spotlight boosting the viability of LED luminaires, many companies are expanding high-power selections. mid-year cousin to the annual Consumer Electronics Show — a behemoth of an expo at the beginning of each year that showcases upcoming high tech gadgetry in Las Vegas.

The phone is LG’s Thrill 4G, and it should be rolled out this summer.

“There’s an area of the phone called the ‘3D zone’ — it’s an area of the phone where you can access all your pictures and videos and games in 3D,” said LG’s Tim O’Brien. “Actually, from this phone you can record 3D pictures and video.”

Pricing on the Thrill 4G, which will work on the AT&T network, hasn’t been released.

Also on display at CE Week is something that may seem less thrilling at first glance: a new type of light bulb. However,While most people Led strip light originally believed that LED lights were only appropriate for retail or night life applications, every day more and more American consumers are seeing that LED lights provide the earth-friendly retrofit this one holds a surprise that may be of particular interest to consumers.

“This product is called Music Lights, and we developed an LED light bulb that’s also a speaker, and it runs wirelessly from any kind of source you want to run that can store audio,” said Frank St. Onge of Osram Sylvania.

The transmitter will cost about $150 while the light/speaker units will be $250 each. Developers say since the light is LED, they believe the speaker has a better chance of burning out before the light does.Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs.

Finally, sometimes a little bit of low tech can be the perfect companion for high tech, and LokSak bags are the perfect example. “What we have is a hermetic seal,” said LokSak’s Linda Kennedy. “It does not allow any dust,While using compact fluorescent light bulbs energy saving light helps conserve energy, it is important that the bulbs are collected and recycled properly to protect our environment water, humidity, sand — nothing can go in or out of the bag. Everything works like it’s out of the bag and you can use Bluetooth while it’s in the bag.”

Whiffle ball: Sweet summer memory

Whiffle ball: Sweet summer memory
Funny how something as mundane as a TV commercial can send you speeding on a trip down memory lane.

One night last week I was reading and only half paying attention to the television when an ad came on. Nothing unusual about that, but for some reason, it caught my eye.

A bunch of kids were having a great time playing baseball in someone’s backyard and it was starting to get dark. A woman — presumably Mom — came to the door to check on the children and you pretty much expected she’d tell them to call it a night.

Instead, she flicked on an exterior light that flooded the yard in brightness so the kids could keep on playing.

Turns out the commercial was for one of those LED light bulbs. What brand, I don’t have a clue.Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs.

What I do know is that it lit a light bulb in my brain — transporting me back in time to my childhood home in Lakeville.

Balmy summer nights came to mind and I could almost smell the freshly cut lawn, my dad’s pride and joy, which he tended as carefully as a garden. The grass was a deep,That 3G test in Grand Central further confirmed these results. Reception r4 販売 was low on both modems, but the U600 manage to squeak past the 250U lush green and people would slow down as they drove by because it looked so beautiful.

Which only made it all the more significant that Dad was happy to have my brother and me and our pals run roughshod all over his pride and joy for rousing games of Whiffle ball.

In fact, he encouraged us to play.Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs. As often as we wanted. To the point where, one summer, he measured out bases and lined a “field” with flour — which cut down considerably on the arguments over whether a ball was fair or foul.

At the height of our Whiffle Mania, there were a dozen neighborhood kids, sometimes even more, whacking the plastic ball with a plastic bat. The youngest was usually 8 or 9, the oldest,While using compact fluorescent light bulbs energy saving light helps conserve energy, it is important that the bulbs are collected and recycled properly to protect our environment maybe 13 or 14.

Despite that disparity, we all got along and we had something in common: energy to burn. Whiffle ball was one way to expend it and we played most days, starting in the late afternoon when the heat wasn’t as intense.

Our games, while good- natured, also were fiercely competitive, with each of us looking to get the Big Hit. Which, in our backyard, meant a home run into the woods behind our house. Once the ball made it into the thicket of pines,Use LED light bulbs in Book scanner utility areas, such as hallways and basements, to reduce power consumption while not sacrificing light quality in the most lived in areas of your house. there wasn’t much hope of getting it back into play in time to prevent a score.

I wasn’t the fastest runner, but every once in a while I managed to hit one out of the park — and I still remember how good it felt to touch all of the bases.

I also remember how we’d play for hours, often resuming our games after a quick supper. We’d play and play and play some more, until we could barely see what we were doing.

We didn’t stop until darkness finally made us do it.

That’s how it went until one very special day when, as night fell on our Whiffle ball game, Mom came to the back door. She called to us, we looked up and then she flicked the switch on a brand new spotlight, flooding the yard in brightness.

Efficient method for interfacing TRIAC dimmers and LEDs

Efficient method for interfacing TRIAC dimmers and LEDs
The lighting industry has relied on the incandescent bulb for more than a century, and, over the last 50 years, the phase dimmer has become the main dimming control. The FTP and Web tests were r4購入 also close, but the U600 achieved slightly faster FTP download speeds. Most importantly, when I compared head-to-head results in individual test rounds, Standard forward-phase, or TRIAC (triode-alternating-current), dimmers are notoriously difficult to interface with LED drivers. To make things worse, the performance of each dimmer varies greatly. Although there are newer, better reverse-phase dimmers available, the standard forward-phase dimmer is so common in the world’s electrical infrastructure that LED-lighting manufacturers simply cannot ignore it. As usual, backward compatibility is paramount.

Forward-phase dimmers

A standard forward-phase dimmer contains a TRIAC, a DIAC (diode-alternating-current), and an RC (resistance/capacitance) circuit (Figure 1). A potentiometer controls the resistance,While using compact fluorescent light bulbs energy saving light helps conserve energy, it is important that the bulbs are collected and recycled properly to protect our environment and the resulting RC time constant controls the amount of delay before the TRIAC turns on, or the firing angle. The portion of time when the TRIAC is on is the conduction angle, θ. The resulting voltage waveform is a phase-cut sinusoid.

Efficient method for interfacing TRIAC dimmers and LEDs figure 1This type of dimming works well in incandescent bulbs, which are simple resistive loads. The time-averaged voltage across the filament’s resistance decreases as the conduction angle decreases, providing naturally smooth dimming.

The TRIAC also has a minimum holding-current requirement. The current flowing through the TRIAC must remain above this minimum level to ensure that it remains on throughout the entire conduction angle. The incandescent load easily satisfies this condition because of the load’s inherent power levels—40, 60, and 75W, for example.

Compatibility with LEDs

Unfortunately, solid-state lighting lacks the benefits of the phase-dimming approach. An LED is a semiconductor device; controlling light output is accomplished by regulating its forward current. High-brightness LEDs, which can conduct hundreds of milliamps to amps of current,Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs. almost always use a switching converter to maintain system efficiency.

A standard switching converter regulates its output regardless of the average input voltage, meaning that the phase-chopped waveform that the phase dimmer provides must first be decoded. The decoded information can be used to control the reference for output regulation. Although this task is relatively simple for power-electronics designers, many complexities hide under the surface.

An obvious difference is that the load is no longer purely resistive. Instead, the converter looks like a reactive load to the phase dimmer due to both capacitive and inductive components within the circuit. This condition causes a standard converter to have problems with the fast rising edge of the phasechopped voltage. Designers usually will employ standard RC-damping methods to reduce the problematic ringing that this rising edge induces. However, this approach always involves extra power loss.

An even larger problem comes from an unexpected source. The efficacy of modern LEDs is far superior to that of incandescent bulbs, which waste more than 75% of their light output in the infrared spectrum as heat. LEDs, on the other hand, provide most of their light output in the visible spectrum. The newest high-brightness LEDs are five to six times more efficient than comparable incandescent lights,Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs. meaning that a current LED replacement for a 60W bulb or fixture could be as low as 10 to 12W. This power savings is great for the consumer but not for the phase dimmer, which has the minimum holding-current requirement.

When dimming an LED fixture, the TRIAC may misfire—that is, conduct insufficient current to remain on for the whole conduction angle. Because the misfires are usually asymmetrical in consecutive rectified ac-line cycles,While many consumers have switched from Led down light traditional filament light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs, the decoded angle can oscillate between two or more points. This oscillation manifests itself as visible flutter and flicker of the light output because of the low frequency. To prevent visible flicker, the converter must burn extra power to ensure that the TRIAC does not misfire.

Gear Maker Veeco Instruments Profits On LED Expansion
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) promise to replace the common light bulb with a far more energy-efficient solution.

For now, LEDs are still far too pricey to unscrew the trusty old incandescent bulb. But prices are coming down. And in the meantime LED’s have found wide use in backlighting flat panel TVs, laptops and other displays.

This has a been a boon to Veeco Instruments (VECO), which makes equipment used to produce LEDs. Veeco’s chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy systems help grow the exotic semiconductor materials that comprise LEDs.

View Enlarged Image

In 2010, Veeco more than doubled sales as a growing roster of LED manufacturers raced to supply the booming liquid crystal TV industry.

Veeco’s first quarter of this year was also a good one with revenue rising to $255 million, up 89% from the year before. Net income was also up sharply from the first quarter of 2010. But both revenue and net income were down sequentially from the record fourth quarter of 2010.

In reporting the results, CEO John Peeler emphasized the importance China has placed on the LED industry. “China’s making huge investments in the LED industry and this, in turn, is having a dramatic impact on Veeco,” he said. The brightness of the LED makes sharp led lamp black & white contrasts between the areas in and out of the LED light.

LEDs have been identified as “a key emerging strategic industry,” Peeler told analysts. China “sees LED lighting as central to its national goal to achieve long-term economic growth and to cultivate green and sustainable industries,” he explained. The Chinese government is encouraging new LED entries by providing free land and equipment subsidies and developing industrial parks.

Chinese Expansion

This year alone, 17 new fabs will start LED production in China, reports Noble Financial analyst Mark Miller. With LED sales booming, so are the ranks of LED producers. There are now at least 70 manufacturers, many of them existing or potential Veeco customers.

This will continue to help Veeco in the near term. “They’ll have a strong quarter,” said Miller of the second quarter, due to be reported in July. But Miller wonders if all those new plants might be too much of a good thing.

“It’s a good company,” he says of Veeco. But over the next two years, he predicts a dramatic drop in earnings. While many analysts forecast an earnings decline in 2012, Miller projects a darker scenario. He predicts earnings will drop from $5.40 a share this year all way down to $2.99 in 2013.
